What happens at a Repair Cafe?
Repair Cafes are run by volunteers who love to fix things and specialise in all different kinds of repairs; from mechanical to textile and electrical to woodwork. We work on a first come first served basis.
When you arrive at a Repair Cafe with your broken item you and your item will be “checked-in”. You’ll then be seen by the next available, suitable repair volunteer who will endeavour to help fix your item.
If you have any spare parts or things you know will be needed to repair your item please bring them with you. For example a new zip to replace a broken one.
After looking at your item one of the following things could happen:-
- Your item can be fixed there and then.
- The repair volunteer may offer you some advice about how to fix your item if it can’t be done there and then e.g. a replacement part you need to order, it requires a specialist professional service etc.
- Your item is deemed unfixable and unfortunately you will have to take it away with you and responsibly disposed of.
- We love a challenge and have a good range of volunteers on hand to tackle your broken items so; whether you need some sewing done on a piece of clothing, a patch on your favourite knitted jumper, have a faulty lamp or a dodgy hoover, you’ve accidentally cut through the hedge trimmer cable (you’re definitely not the first!) or got a wobbly chair, whatever it is, we will do our best to get it fixed!
P.S. If you’re someone who likes fixing things too and would like to volunteer, get in touch!
